I Am the Sinner, A Passenger of Hell’s Corsair

Across the distant sea comes the ship of heaven,
Accompanied by the corsair of hell.
But I am the sinner,
A passenger of Hell's Corsair.

In life my lover was lost to the darkness of death,
By a fugitive that stabbed her heart.
He was in need of money,
And she did not comply.
He too was a sinner,
A passenger of Hell's Corsair.

The man took her and ran his knife through.
I retaliated in fury and beat him to death.
So began my journey as a sinner,
A passenger of Hell's Corsair.

Before my execution,
The freedom of death was sweet release,
From the sickness and war of the world.

I intended to see good white lands,
But then I became a sinner,
A passenger of Hell's Corsair.

Now as I wait for a ship to come,
I hope for the ship of Heaven.
But I am the sinner,
And I will be a passenger of Hell's Corsair.

Greg's explanation of this poem, a writing assignment called "Steal a Line":

I picked this line from Stephen Crane's When the Prophet because I wrote my poem and read some of Crane’s other works at the same time, and I found that it worked with the tone of my poem. I liked this line ("I intended to see good white lands"), and it fit well with my poem, which was written in the same style as his. This line describes where the man thought he was going to go before he killed another man. The man goes to hell, represented by two ships, one from heaven and one from hell.

Poet Tree

We play baseball
And eat hot dogs in the
Warm sun.
Growing grass
And blossoming flowers
Take a drink from April
Showers.

Longer days and later sunsets,
Blooming trees and dew on the
Ground.
The Easter bunny eats an apple
And badminton with a friend.

Memorial Day comes around the corner,
We honor those who fought.
Afterwards, we might go swimming,
and as spring comes to a close,
We’ll all be grinning.
