SCIENCE EXPO Abstract
I. Hypothesis
I decided to test the intelligence of dogs and see which gender was smarter. I wanted to see if sometimes the gender does not affect the dogs intelligence, but other factors like the breed and the size of the dog My hypothesis stated that female dogs are more intelligent than male dogs. II. Methodology
In performing my experiment, I recruited ten dogs (five males and five females). I came up with three tests, two of which were problem solving, and the other was a test to see how well the dogs responded to commands. The controlled variables were the three tests. The dogs were all put through the same tasks and had the same equipment used on all of the dogs. The manipulated variable was the gender of the dog. The first test was a commands test. I had the dog placed about five feet away from the owner, then in order the owner said the commands come, down/off (which ever the owner used), sit. I timed the dog to see how quickly they responded with my watch. The second test I used a towel to drape the front half of the dog, and time the dog to see how quickly it can escape. The final test involved placing a treat on a china plate and under a plastic cup and timing the dog to see how quickly it could get the treat. I tested the dogs and recorded my data, and found my conclusion to the data, ready to apply my results to outside the classroom. III. Data and Analysis
The female dogs performed better than the males. Their average was 10 seconds on the commands, while the males average was 20.8 seconds. The females got an average of 7.6 seconds on the Escape From a Towel test while the males got 18.8. However, the males did have a lower and better average than the females on the Knock Over a Container test, the males scoring with 17 seconds on their average, and the females scoring 19.4 seconds. Overall, my data chart and my graph proved my hypothesis correct. The females had better averages than the males on 2 out of 3 tests. To add to the females better averages they also had nearly half of what the males had on those two tests, and on the last one had only two seconds higher than the males. IV. Summary and Conclusion
The female dogs are obviously more intelligent than the males. I found out that that not only my hypothesis was correct, but that size and breed do contribute to the intelligence of the dog. Also the dog may be very intelligent based on how it was trained. This means that a dog may be very trainable and very responsive to the commands it knows, and that it can figure out how to solve problems, but knows its limitations from how its owner has taught it. I was able to accept my hypothesis because based on my data, the female dogs had better averages on 2 of the 3 tests. V. Application
I have found that female beings are smarter than males. They have better common sense and are better at solving problems. They also have a larger population. Since females are smarter, and there are more females than males, that means that females might make for better leaders. All writing edited only for spelling and punctuation by Greg's Dad.
